Upgraded, finally

As of this evening I have finally upgraded Schleifstein.net to the latest greatest version of wordpress. This means new look and easier future for me. Although the look isn’t that new… The banner up top is actually my first wordpress banner. Back in 2000 or so I installed wordpress 1.2 (now on 2.6.1) and used the Kubrick psd template to create a custom theme complete with hand drawn(via stylus) self portrait banner. Unfortunately I haven’t had my own wacom tablet since the storm so it’ll be awhile before this is changed again.

Side note I’m helping a friend get a new site up(more after we finish). He’s a pro graphic designer with ten years experience who just got laid off. If you know of any openings email me or comment below and I’ll get him in touch with you. He also does commissions of custom t-shirts, ties, labels, logos and portraits and more.

Thanks and enjoy the new old look.

Pic below of the soon to be disappointed crowd before the saints game. Thanks again Jason David and ain’t-like defense.

A triumphant return to Weblogs, Inc via Download Squad

Today it became official. With the publishing of my first post on DownloadSquad.com I have now returned to pro-blogging. As you may remember I started blogging about Flash way back in early 2005 on FlashInsider.com as part of the Weblogs, Inc Network. The network got bought by AOL that fall and FlashInsider got retired soon after (we only have a few bloggers and two of us were in NOLA for Katrina, so I guess you could say the site was another victim of the storm). A while later, after returning to New Orleans, I started blogging for BloggingNewOrleans.com (also on Weblogs, Inc). Soon I was promoted to lead blogger there and wrote often about the state of the city. Unfortunately the site was retired around the same time the baby was born and I decided to take some time off of blogging (I got burnt out writing about NOLA and didn’t have time). Last month of so I emailed DLS and asked if they were hiring since I thought they could use a Flash blogger and they immediately brought me aboard. And so today I have posted for the first time. Read my review of the science fiction short story podcast Escape Pod at Download Squad.

New ways to see what I’m thinking (Twitter and Del.icio.us)

Mike the admin here, just wanted to call you attention to two new things in the sidebar.

Although I don’t like the idea of certain types of social networks (stalking is bad) I have joined twitter, finally. I was sucked in by Twit.tv, Jason Calacanis, Slice of Scifi and PVPonline and just couldn’t hold out any longer.

I also added a running feed of my del.icio.us bookmarks. I’ve used the site for quite a while to track cool sites and keep tabs on ideas for blog posts for WIN while at flashinsider and bloggingneworleans and i have wanted to add a running tag here for a while, but never got around to it til recently.

Anyway just wanted to give you a heads up.

Baby’s fine. Wife’s good. Be sure to check flickr often for pics and now movies (add us as a contact to see everything, we like to keep most family photos private).

Check out my dad’s book

Since today is the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, I expect a few hits from people looking for my dad, Mark Schleifstein. Please visit the official website for his book, Path of Destruction, to contact him. And while your there, pick up a copy of the book from the Amazon link on the main page.

On a side note, I made the page for his book and currently maintain it for him, so please blame me for any spelling or grammar mistakes. Thanks.

TTLB stats for Blogging New Orleans

I have yet to understand what this means but: for Bloggingneworleans.com

And for the Bloggingneworleans.com podcast

and for schleifstein.net

and pathofdestructionbook.com

Coming Soon!!!

My dad’s book is almost out and I’m helping him create a new site for it…

coming soon… the Official Path of Destruction book website!

I’ve been noticed, and the future…

Today, I received a very interesting comment on my More Merger News: Adobe plugin mimics Macromedia Contribute… post. John Dowdell gave me a good long explanation on how the new GoLive plugin the allows:

A site designer can specify special editable areas in an HTML document. A content contributor can then edit each of these areas, one at a time, in a form-based application.

This seems very similar to the template feature found standard in Dreamweaver which allows the lead designer to develop a main style/form and then block off sections of the pages for editing by members of the design team to edit later. I used this to feature to create a site that had constantly changing content (before reaching production… heck government work, it takes forever to those civil servants to decide on anything). This is different from Contribute which allows:

A content contributor can browse to an HTML page and then (assuming they have site privileges) can edit that content while looking at the whole page. Optionally, a Dreamweaver (or GoLive!) designer can use Dreamweaver templates to lock out areas from editing.

I reccommend checking out the full comment for more info.

To John Dowdell, I can only say thanks. I had noticed some hits coming into my site from Macromedia.com since I started worrying about how the Big Merge might change the Macromedia apps I have come to love and use everyday, and you have helped make my day by making my comments seem to count.

Now a quick site notice… Something big has just happened… I’m not ready to go into details, but let’s just say Flash commentary is about to change as we know it!

Check back soon for more details.
