			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While attending <a href="http://www.uno.edu" target="_blank" title="University of New Orleans">UNO</a> for my senior semester as an art major I was required to an Artist&#8217;s Statement describing my influences and artistic ideas.  Artist&#8217;s normally write Statements to introduce themselves to people attending a gallery opening, but I wrote mine to try to impress a small group of professors, who taught all types of art in all types of media, and to introduce them to the idea of web based media and Macromedia Flash being used to create art. <p>I am one of the few digital, or new, media students who are seniors this semester.  Some may wonder if digital, or web based (in my case), media is really an art form and why someone would choose to make it their influence.  What kind of fine arts influences can a web-based artist have?  Not many.  I, personally, have not learned of any artist, during my art history classes, not I would like to follow much less let influence my work.  I feel that digital media is an entirely new art form that takes some influence from the graphic design arts, but I have only participated in the two 2000 level art history survey classes and now I am in the medieval art history class.  Needless to say, I have gained little from this experience other than a new found love of the complexity of the art world from the beginning of time.  Artists are always striving to try something new and to be seen as up and coming.  Digital media is the newest way to do this.  I am able to sculpt, paint, draw, photograph and do anything else I imagine with this new art form.  Luckily I have been able to narrow my search for new ideas down to ways of presenting a dynamic and changeable world to my audience.  Using new web design tools and techniques, I have been able to give my user hands on participation in my work.  My style utilizes the gestural figures learned within my figure drawing class and the cartoon antics of my favorite humorous comic books.  Plus I have been able to draw on some of the new tools added to my favorite web art program Macromediaâ€™s Flash MX (the sixth of their Flash series).  I have chosen the web based medium because it gives me a chance to develop my art with a world wide critical audience and with the flow of new technology.  Now I can create something and put it online while a work in progress then get reviews and critiques from around the globe.  Also I have a love of computers that developed with my love of art in grade school.  From elementary school on I tried to take as many art classes as possible and when I hit eleventh grade in 1994 I was given a chance to work with computers as a programmer for the first time and discovered the joy of creating my first computer graphic with GW Basic.  From that time forward, I was hooked.  When I first entered college I was a computer science major, but this did not feed my hunger to do more art so I switched to art studio and began to create more in the artistic venue.  I chose my emphasis soon after transferring to UNO and learning from a teacher that I really wasnâ€™t cut out for a normal artist life.  I started seeing websites like <a href="http://www.joecartoon.com" target="_blank" title="Joe Cartoon Flash Humor Animation site">http://www.joecartoon.com</a> where I learned about humor and Flash.  Here I was able to see artfully done animated scenes of mischief, but the user wasnâ€™t really allowed to join to experience.  I started to see sites the taught me more about flash such as <a href="http://www.flashkit.com" target="_blank" title="Flashkit is a large online resource for Flash tutorials and more">http://www.flashkit.com</a>, where I learned how to form my ideas into real web work and where I was able to see other peopleâ€™s design and art as it was in process.  The way I was able to develop much of my skills was through creation itself though.  I was able to work in New Orleans for a computer company and I got to have a lot of freedom in the design process.  I developed a site to a photographer who was looking for: â€œSomething modern, but with a fine art edgeâ€ (<a href="http://www.neilhurd.com" target="_blank" title="Neil Hurd Photography">http://www.neilhurd.com</a>). Also I was able to create a dynamically growing phone book for a group of doctors uptown (http://www.tourodocs.com).  This helped me to hone my skills while looking for a way to express my own ideas in this medium.  But wait, there where other thing that influenced me, like love.  This past year I fell hard for a girl who is working on her degree in elementary education.  She helped me see that even the child in me could be present in my art and so I was able to formulate a way to tell my artistic story.  I decided to use a new feature in Flash that allows access to a userâ€™s web or video camera, if hooked up to their computer, to create a story based web site where the use actually gets to appear within the story.  I had written a comic story to be animated online with the user appearing as the face of every one of the characters.  Also this newfound feature has made it possible for me to put the userâ€™s face into any picture contained on my site and print a copy out for their own use. I also hope to add a way for a user without a web or video camera to create his or her own faces in the future.</p>

(There is no reason a company with the resource of ms should continue to put out the junk os that they continue to release.)</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>well, i haven&#8217;t posted in a while&#8230;  i was blank for about a week and a half before the free for all and now i haven&#8217;t even posted my ipod shuffle costume pics&#8230; instead i start to ramble about nothing in particular in order to give you something&#8230; how about we think of this as an artsy post because i am speaking like most of the art students i ever went to school with (college, in high school most knew they were full of it)&#8230;<br />
<span id="more-100"></span>you see if you get into a conversation with the stereo typical art major(not art history, cause they can&#8217;t even draw so of course they are full of it and why would you even deign to speak to them any way?) you will discover that you are not actually talking with this person but listening to them complain about having to go to a non-art school for money reasons (we really go to these schools cause we aren&#8217;t good enough to get in!) or biz-nitch about how society doesn&#8217;t understand them and how strange it is they got fired for the fifth time from the same job that keeps rehiring them because the coffee shop can&#8217;t get any better employees&#8230; you see i didn&#8217;t have that problem as i was a &#8216;new media&#8217; or &#8216;digital media&#8217; emphasis art major which meant i was a heck of a lot smarter than any of those fools&#8230;<br />
wait&#8230; no, i&#8217;m not better than any of those wish we could be hippies but we need to keep a job, waiters who try to draw or paint and just come off as snotty people because i maintain a web-site devoted to myself and my work&#8230; i show off and discuss my art as if it could hang in a museum, but not one piece here will ever be printed and mounted in NOMA only discussed by me while others act as if they care what i&#8217;m saying when they really are waiting for me to finish my &#8216;thought&#8217; so they can interject with something about themselves&#8230;<br />
aaahhhh! that&#8217;s better&#8230; don&#8217;t you love a good ramble that seems to reveal more about a person than they want you to see&#8230; time to get back to posting as this has been mean enough to hopefully force me to get back on schedule&#8230; tonight i post the ipod photos tomorrow i post some traditional sketch book pages and then i will create a new photoshop abstract!<br />
hopefully i&#8217;m not just talking out my arse&#8230;<br />
hmmmm&#8230; we shall see i guess&#8230; maybe its time to start using this site like an actual &#8216;blog&#8217; and post links to things i want to comment on&#8230; hmmmm&#8230;<br />
we shall see&#8230;. </p>
<p>currently i&#8217;m trudging through <a href="http://www.w3schools.com/default.asp" title="web design tutorials" target="_blank">W3Schools</a> site to learn a little xml, xhtml, html, css (which is the real reason why i&#8217;m there), and other stuff&#8230; try it out and learn a little!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Today I will begin a new weekly feature: Constructive Criticism. This feature requires me to pick two random words for the english dictionary and enter them into our favorite search engine.  Then pick a page from that search at random.  Finally, I will select a URL from that search engine page and describe its contents to all.  The constructive criticism will include the search words, link to search engine page and of course link to the URL to be criticized.  I will list three problems with the design of the site and three good things about the site including but not limited to the content and the over all design of the site.<br />
But first, how can I make critique someone else&#8217;s site without looking at my own&#8230;<br />

The BAD:<br />
1. site is image heavy and may load slow for some users<br />
2. header includes extremely busy and large image that may confuse some users<br />
3. while content may be interesting to the author it doesn&#8217;t seem to relate to the audience</p>
<p>The GOOD:<br />
1. good idea to display an artist portfolio as a blog that continually forces the author to create<br />
2. new features seem to appear all the time, including digital art, traditional art, and a weekly recommendation from amazon<br />
3. the use of the up and coming wordpress blog software allowed for great design flexibility.</p>
<p>Conclusion:<br />
They say you are your own worst critic and I think I just proved it by being a little to nice to myself.  I would love to hear from my visitors.  How can I improve?  What should I get rid of and what should I add?<!--more--></p>
