Constructive Criticism

Today I will begin a new weekly feature: Constructive Criticism. This feature requires me to pick two random words for the english dictionary and enter them into our favorite search engine. Then pick a page from that search at random. Finally, I will select a URL from that search engine page and describe its contents to all. The constructive criticism will include the search words, link to search engine page and of course link to the URL to be criticized. I will list three problems with the design of the site and three good things about the site including but not limited to the content and the over all design of the site.
But first, how can I make critique someone else’s site without looking at my own…

Unfinished self portrait print

Self PrintThis partially finished work was to be part of a print-making project based around showing the artist involved in something he loved. In my can I planned to place a glowing computer monitor reflection in the eye of my face to depict my own emphasis on computers and how they can be used to create art. The work was not finished due to other more pressing concerns, but it still made it into my final portfolio. The work was created Fall semester, 2002. What’s that sound project?

Sound projectThis sound project is not really an example of the greatest Flash animation, but it is a sample of the creative process and ways to integrate sound as a design element. The project involves three short sounds in repetitive loops. The project allows the user to raise the volume of each individual sound and to change the pan of the sound. The work was created during the Spring semester 2001 at UNO. Click through to see a larger version of the work.

Tron

This week’s recommendation from Amazon.com is the ever-insightful Tron. This extremely entertaining movie features a character that gets a little to close with his computer and ends up literally joining the game. I really love owning and watching this film, even though the computers are dated. I have even heard rumors that a re-make is in the works updated and made current with the latest viruses and the latest villains… I could put a rude Bill Gates or Michael Dell remark here or even a Steve Jobs one, but… Tron has inspired many over the years and hopefully it will even inspire you. Remember you can help support this site by purchasing products from the Amazon.com links throughout the site.

Complexitree

ComplexitreeBefore I give my commentary, one note slash apology. While editing the photo for this post i realized that some on my images are a little too large for dial-up. I remember my days before DSL and I just wanted to say sorry to any non-broadband users out there. I create my JPGs as progressives so they load over time and i also try to keep my file size down, but artistic images are inherently complex and thus will have a larger file size. Now onto today’s image. This photograph was taken in Lafrienere Park in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana and shows the sun shining through a couple of trees. I like the way this piece seems to be related to my other works through its complexity. Most of my at is based around complex gestural forms and related to the stark contrasts found here between the negative and postive spaces. The work was created January 17, 2005. Colored glass image

Digital Media, second semester, final project, image gallery 3This work was part of the same project in which the Painterly image project and the Grainy image project were included. The piece appears as a strange set of rainbow lines angled through a frament of broken glass that has a small imperfection in it. The active style of the work helps to keep the viewer involved in the piece and the angular lines add the the tension of it as well. This is another example of a way to create interestingly simple art in relatively little time via Photoshop. This work was created March 13, 2001. Click though to see a larger version of the work.

Repetition in ink

Repetition in inkHere was have a reletively old pen and ink on watercolor paper. This project was part of my Design I class at Mississippi State. The class taught me about black and white based artistic design and ways to arrange a work that is pleasing to the eye yet interesting to the mind. This piece used a small one inch square design repeated to create a larger more interesting project. I used an artist pen made by Micron to shade the various parts. The work was created Spring semester, 1998. Click through to see a larger version of the work. Also, I’d like to welcome all who have just discovered this site and encourage you to comment on each piece as you see fit. I plan on taking this site into the future by adding artist critiques of my own and I would love to hear from all of you.
